Choosing the right equipment

There is a longstanding debate around free weights versus machines at the gym.

When there are so many different options for equipment, it can be confusing to work out what equipment you should use. Here's what you need to know...

It’s important to acknowledge that when it comes to machines and free weights, neither is better than the other. They serve different purposes and your choice should depend on your individual needs and goals around exercise. Like most things in life, they both have pros and cons and understanding these can help you make an informed decision on when to include machines or free weights into your workout.

Machines
PROS CONS
Machines are easy to learn how to use and therefore great for beginners. Most machines come with instructions and some even count your reps and rest time for you! Machines can limit the use of stabiliser and core muscles because they support your body. This can mean movement is less 'functional' or relatable to real life situations where your core plays an important role.
Machines have the ability to isolate muscle groups so are handy if you have a muscle group you want to work on in particular. Not every machine can be adjusted to fit your body type perfectly. They are not 'one size fits all'.
Machines are designed to have a fixed movement path and clear end point so you don't need a spotter when working out. Sometimes machines limit your range of movement due to the way they are built, for example the length of the track or size of lever.
Free weights
PROS CONS
Allow for more functional, real life movements. Can be more challenging and require more time to learn a proper technique.
Require the use of more stabiliser and core muscles and allow for multiple muscle groups to be trained at the same time. Certain exercises require a spotter, especially when heavy weights are being used or if you're learning a new technique.
You can do a variety of exercises, targeting a range of muscle groups using the same equipment. You also have a greater range of motion. There is a greater potential for injury when not performing these exercises correctly. Remember if you are ever in doubt, ask one of our trainers.

Depending on your fitness level it could be beneficial to include a combination of both machines and free weights in your program, or progress from machines to free weights.
